During 2011 I have enjoyed reading the following books with regard to poetry:

New Seeds of Contemplation – Thomas Merton
Carnets (Camus’ Diary and working notebooks) 1935-1942 –
Albert Camus
The Art of the Sonnet –
Stephen Burt and David Mikics
The Poetics of Space –
Gaston Bachelard
The Duino Elegies & The Sonnets to Orpheus –
Rainer Maria Rilke
All Travellers We (Poems for Shelton Lea) –
Eaglemont Press (Melb)

I have also enjoyed reading:

Once upon a time in Papunya – Vivien Johnson
After America –
Mark Steyn
The original copy of The Immigration Restriction Bill 1901– to compare it to the creative narrative that has emerged as ‘The White Australia Policy’ as depicted in the SBS Series Immigration Nation.

During the summer break:

I am looking forward to reading Demonic – Ann Coulter.

For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case

  • Pennies for the Shark

A friend and longtime supporter of Quadrant, Clive James sent us a poem in 2010, which we published in our December issue. Like the Taronga Park Aquarium he recalls in its 'mocked-up sandstone cave' it's not to be forgotten
