As Thomas Jefferson put it, the study of Latin and Greek enables pupils to develop memory and acquire the necessary rational and expressive skills 'for the attainment of science', while impressing 'their minds with useful facts and useful principles'. As a worthwhile field of study is it any wonder the architects of the modern curriculum aren't particularly keen?
