Valerie Murray: Wheelchair Vista

The view is not good;
no eye contact, except
with other wheelies,
or little children, ready
to smile and respond.
But you confront bums,
everything from double-wobble
to pinched minuscule,
guts blocking out the rest.
Knees, fragile or sturdy,
with or without props,
skin seen through torn denim.
Above you heads bend,
sending posed selfies,
not connected to those near them.
Intent on phones, devices,
texting, playing games,
backing into you,
the immediate invisible.
Not all bad, though.
Surprised, apologetic
when they do see you.
Heads bend to smile.
Hands reach out to help.

For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case
