The Pattern in the Carpet

I knew it from the first. I always knew it.

You try to tell me different, but my heart, it

Whispers, and my blood it whispers, do it.

It’s right, it’s powerful and there’s nothing to it.

So do it now and finish what we started.

The time’s gone wrong and nothing else will mend it.

We have to do it now. We have to end it.

The heart is true, so listen to the heart.

He’s dead and done for. We will never part.

The time’s gone wrong and we’ve gone wronger, so

We say it, then we do the thing we said.

The saying takes us on from yes or no

To doing what we should have long ago.

So say it now and make him good as dead.

So say it now and seal it with a kiss:

The consequence is this, and this, and this.

The heart is true, so listen to the heart.

He’s dead and done for. We will never part.

How do we do it? Tell me how we do it.

Give me a plan. I need a plan. I need

A map. You draw the map, I’ll do the deed.

It’s right, it’s powerful and there’s nothing to it.

I knew it from the first. I always knew it.

Give me your hand. Take it, this is my hand,

A hand to do a thing, the thing we planned.

The heart is true, so listen to the heart.

He’s dead and done for. We will never part.

Our little lives foreshorten day by day.

What’s left of all our cleverness and cunning?

The time we filled with love and sex is running

Down and there’s nothing done and all to pay.

With dreaming dreams we dreamed our lives away.

Though the sweet taste of it is sweet as honey.

It’s money we need now, a lot of money.

The heart is true, so listen to the heart.

He’s dead and done for. We will never part.

You have to have. You have to have the daring.

You have to do as if there’s nothing after.

You have to have the thing it takes, you have to.

You have to care, you have to be past caring.

You have to care and share what’s made for sharing.

The heart is true, so listen to the heart.

He’s dead and done for. We will never part.

It’s right, it’s powerful and there’s nothing to it.

I knew it from the first. I always knew it.

  • Aboriginal Culture is Young, Not Ancient

To claim Aborigines have the world's oldest continuous culture is to misunderstand the meaning of culture, which continuously changes over time and location. For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case
