The Big C Word
The big C word sounds loud on trams
the big C word scares lemmings and lambs
the big C word gets attention in banks
the big C word in China stops tanks
it’s hard to argue with the big C word
the big C word will always be heard
they’ve tried to kill it with pills and gas
they’ve tried to quiet it with confession and Mass
they’re tried to silence it in hospitals and class
they’ve tried to show it behinds bars and glass
they’ve tried to kick it in the teeth and the ass
the big C word always gets up
the big C word just wont shut up
the big C word can halt conversation
the big C word doesn’t need invitation
the big C word will get you people’s sympathy
the C word is big like a people’s symphony
the C word is louder than a Kalashnikov gun
the C word will burn you like a Red Giant Sun
the C word is more invasive than the Hun
the C word can crack the unbreakable locks
the C word will put you in a six-sided box
the big C word survived Berlin & Viet Nam
it can eat up your skin like an Atom bomb
it can tattoo your arm like a Holocaust victim
& make you skinny like Twiggys or how fashions depict ’em
it’s hard to argue with the big C word
the big C word will always be heard
the big C word can lower the Rich
the big C word gives politicians a stitch
the big C word is the raw red Itch
the big C word is the Bone Fide Bitch
you just can’t teach it with prayers or law
you can’t cut it out with a knife or a saw
can’t spray it away with insecticide or pepper
you can’t exile it to an island like a leper
the big C word will always be heard
the big C word always has the last word.

To claim Aborigines have the world's oldest continuous culture is to misunderstand the meaning of culture, which continuously changes over time and location. For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case

A friend and longtime supporter of Quadrant, Clive James sent us a poem in 2010, which we published in our December issue. Like the Taronga Park Aquarium he recalls in its 'mocked-up sandstone cave' it's not to be forgotten
