Suzanne Edgar: Bypassed

Cafes and shops are closing

in the little country town.

Like eyes that have seen enough,

the shutters rattle down

and stay that way.

In Ryans’ old emporium

lingerie’s had its day,

haberdashery, too.

A pity the Greeks left for the city,

they’re doing Development now.

Natural Health is trying hard

but Beauty Therapy palled.

Bookings are slow for the Town Hall

with its peeling-paint facade

and “TREASURES” sells collectables

deserters have left behind.

When the Royal Oak changed hands

the kitchen staff resigned:

“Meals Off till Further Notice”.

No one seemed to mind

when Front Bar cancelled the bands.

The truckies trade is all but gone

so Comfort Inn dropped its rates,

their VACANCY sign is rusted on.

For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case

A friend and longtime supporter of Quadrant, Clive James sent us a poem in 2010, which we published in our December issue. Like the Taronga Park Aquarium he recalls in its 'mocked-up sandstone cave' it's not to be forgotten
