Gin-Soaked Love

O why did you turn from my gin-soaked love?

My heart sends out its nightly petitions.

How could devotion be less than enough?

I think of you and your cruel rebuff—

the past comes back with savage insistence.

How could you turn from my gin-soaked love?

My passion was not some specious stuff,

it came with the strength of fever visions.

How could devotion be less than enough?

From such heights, I fell to this trough,

and now the nights pass with moist reminiscence.

How could you turn from my gin-soaked love?

Some idols have seen all their gold-lead flake off

but mine is still subject to fresh accretions.

How could devotion be deemed not enough?

While some still show pity, others now scoff,

yet still my heart sounds its dull repetitions.

O why did you turn from my gin-soaked love?

How could devotion be less than enough?

For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case
