Black clad figures
take up viola and violins
tanned and slick with shellac,
tuck curves under chins and bow flat bellies.
The lutenist plucks strings
pulled taut from stalk to tail
along the pale cut surface
of a theorbo pear.
Musicians sway in sound waves
at one with their reeds.
Breath escapes beneath fingers
so swift they blur the stave.
The cellist draws his lady back
to rest between splayed legs,
teases her neck and makes music,
all the while two-timing
with the woman at the harpsichord
who beats a floorboard tattoo.
The audience stills in the silence,
stirs from pause to applause.

To claim Aborigines have the world's oldest continuous culture is to misunderstand the meaning of culture, which continuously changes over time and location. For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case
