Rhyme of the Sea
Rhyme of the Sea
The sea’s a dream
hides in its green
a different set of species
to the land.
Its sway and sweep
lead swimmers on to sleep
a universe of water:
eels with pop out eyes
terrorize
silver fish synchronize
parachutes of jellyfish
will rise
through all the undiscovered
vast array of lives.
The sea’s a silk embrace
a champagne bath
to mend a land worn face,
steals body weight, gives flight,
showers space with fractured light,
here where some are drawn to play
but most are kept at bay:
death could be
so soon away.
For rules are different here
where another side of joy
is fear
and unlike worlds
lie side by side
so near.

To claim Aborigines have the world's oldest continuous culture is to misunderstand the meaning of culture, which continuously changes over time and location. For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case
