Raccoons
We’re advised to open the windows only a crack
else the raccoons who live in the roof might enter
our rooms. All night, I stretch out in the big crisp bed,
hoping to be surprised by yellow eyes looking into mine,
to wake suddenly, sensing another heart beating in time
to the stars—but raccoons, like you, leave me well alone,
even though my window’s wide open and, really,
the distance from attic to room isn’t far.

To claim Aborigines have the world's oldest continuous culture is to misunderstand the meaning of culture, which continuously changes over time and location. For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case
