Prayer for Pentecost

Tim Murphy

Jun 01 2011

1 mins

I pray for each good priest
who subjugates his will
to yours, who lays your feast
before me. Savior, still
the whirlwinds in their breasts.
Steady them for their tests.
Lord, hear my prayer.

I pray for virtuous men
who never knew your grace.
Each night I plead again,
“Let them behold your face,
love them with your elect.”
I pray for Anthony Hecht.
Lord, hear my prayer.

My prayer list for the ill
changes as old friends die,
as my coevals fill
their swelling ranks, and I
whom you have spared so long,
old as I am, stay strong.
Lord, hear my prayer.

Lastly I pray for me,
a sinner so long lost,
so blind, I couldn’t see
the tongues of Pentecost
descending all ablaze
to teach me thanks and praise.
Lord, hear my prayer.

For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case
