Hospital Poems

Discovery

I write stories about tigers,

but it wasn’t until

the hospital tried to bully me

that I discovered

I had married one.

Lesson

I am one of the class

Raised without being taught
How to fight or show anger.

Is that

What hospital bureaucracy is for?

Beyond

The Reverend Mr Paley said

That finding a watch on a beach

Implied the existence of a watch-maker.

But he could have gone one step further

And said that it also implied

The existence of a beach-maker.

For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case

  • Pennies for the Shark

A friend and longtime supporter of Quadrant, Clive James sent us a poem in 2010, which we published in our December issue. Like the Taronga Park Aquarium he recalls in its 'mocked-up sandstone cave' it's not to be forgotten
