Gary Hotham: IX Haiku
IX Haiku
night
pulling over in a small town
everyone has his door
mountaintops
distant views never making the news
centuries separate centuries
museum guards check
our laughter
crossing sunny streets
a few days
where Rome was built
New Year’s day
outliving last year’s days
for our world to end
under scattered clouds miles from land
the dead weight
of history
more leaves fall hiding the fallen
tourist signs
in more than one language
where her skipping stone
sinks
the latest news not changing our day
clouds
losing their place
all the light between stars

To claim Aborigines have the world's oldest continuous culture is to misunderstand the meaning of culture, which continuously changes over time and location. For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case
