Doug Buckley: Be careful what you quip

Be careful what you quip

We knew that it was just a joke,

at least we Ozzies knew,

just a jest by this local bloke

bus-driver ’round the view.

The lad was a big Ozzie yob

of twenty years perhaps,

the tourists a Germanic mob,

eager, taking snaps.

He bounded up to the steering wheel

happy to be our guide,

but what would be his tourist spiel?

prepare us for our ride

along the cliffs above the bay,

a truly precipitous track:

“Today’s a really bonzer day,

I’ve got me licence back.”

Berlin bookings down they note

for that particular trip

so the moral you’ll now hear them quote:

“Be careful what you quip.”

For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case
