D.S. Martin: ‘Love’
Love (3)
After George Herbert
Despite the evidence my soul drew back
not trusting
my own experience my soul grew slack
cautious hesitant afraid to play the fool
uncool amid the sophisticates
& yet Love bade me welcome
though my soul knowing
my march to every drum my lack
to every measure my conspicuous flaws
clearly showing
I would buckle under pressure prove
a detriment to the cause
Despite the odds quick-eyed Love
smoothed my wrinkling brow
& soothed me saying
You’re ready now
