The Romans Never Left

The English say that in 410
all the Romans left for home, but not so
when you factor in the chromosomes that stayed
and could not swim or row.

Perhaps a fast quinquereme or two
sailed south to Gaul whence on to Arles,
“Little Rome” as Bouches du Rhône—
to wait for Charlemagne.
They left behind their genes.
