The Solace of the Stilt

i

It’s unfortunate

for sure, stilt, to be famous

only for your legs.

ii

Still, stilt, isn’t “stilt”

better than your lesser known

moniker, “longshanks”?

iii

Yes, lamentable,

the length of your legs, stilt—yet

they’re pretty in pink!

Sand-Bathing

Little crop circles …

only, they’re not in a crop

of wheat or barley

but in the litter of leaves

on the forest floor …

made not by pranksters

or aliens … but by quails

wanting a place to sand-bathe.

Perceptions

What I see as beauty

he sees as delicacy,

my Aboriginal friend

aiming his rifle

at the bush turkey,

the bustard we spotted

while on driveabout

in his battered Land Rover.

For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case

  • Pennies for the Shark

A friend and longtime supporter of Quadrant, Clive James sent us a poem in 2010, which we published in our December issue. Like the Taronga Park Aquarium he recalls in its 'mocked-up sandstone cave' it's not to be forgotten
