Madam: Archbishop Fisher (July-August 2024) does not resist the attacks on his church by the political, social or scientific atheists and those who insist on not being told what to do.

To claim Aborigines have the world's oldest continuous culture is to misunderstand the meaning of culture, which continuously changes over time and location. For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case

A friend and longtime supporter of Quadrant, Clive James sent us a poem in 2010, which we published in our December issue. Like the Taronga Park Aquarium he recalls in its 'mocked-up sandstone cave' it's not to be forgotten

Was Kenneth Clark an enlightened tastemaker who backed modern English painting and sculpture? Posterity has judged him favourably. Still, three decades after his death, as English modernist art is relegated to the chronicle of history, popular perceptions need to be tested. Did he support genuine talent?

From our archives: "My school had quite an influx of young teachers around that time, and my new young Form Five English teacher used George MacBeth’s anthology Poetry 1900 to 1965 only once or twice, and ignored George Orwell’s Down and Out in Paris and London completely. But those two books changed my life"

Australia has not yet gone very far down the path followed by Britain and France, but we are heading in that direction. To understand how Australia could slide into a theocratic-socialist dystopia, people need to recognize only one thing: key élites of Western countries would sell them out in a heartbeat

Australians with the wrong skin colour no longer have the right to access their own country. The proof arrived in the form of a stiff fine issued by NSW bureaucrats because I climbed Mt Warning, alleged to be the sole province of one particular Aboriginal group. Well I won't stop climbing and call on Australians of all colours to join me when I defy the law again

The Deep State loathes Trump. Not only is he an outsider who barged into their cosy world of crony politics, but he threatens their hegemony and says he will take it from them with mass sackings and changes of personnel, and they are terrified he will. That is why they want him stopped at any price, even if it requires an assassin's bullet

Where things have gone wrong is that the necessary, and in my view God-ordained, search for material causes of everything -- of which all honest scientists and even professional atheist Richard Dawkins are in honourable pursuit -- has been mostly framed in a way which excludes the transcendental

"If another person says, 'How’s your day been?' she’ll scream. On the way to her treehouse she notices Matthew as he steps out of the alfresco shower, partially covered by a towel like one of those male strippers in Magic Mike. She makes a mental note to keep her eyes open in the yoga class when he makes 'adjustments' to their poses"

I have always wondered why the rage against Mrs Rinehart burns so bright – and the answer came to me while watching the athletes she supports to the tune of millions of dollars every year as they won race after race, gold after gold in Paris. The Left basically wants to be judged on its warm and fuzzy words, not the hard, measurable outcomes that underscore her philanthropy
