On Becoming a Grandfather
For Katie Margaret Crowley

I thought I loved until you came along,

No other love can now become a threat,

Love is faithful or everything goes wrong,

There’s nothing I have loved that I regret.

I thought I loved until you came along,

You freed me up to be myself, and now

That I’ve found my voice again in song,

I sing with all that heaven will allow.

I thought I loved until you came along,

The ghosts that haunted me I now call friend,

I love all that I hid for far too long,

When I think of you, Kate, all my old hurts mend.

Never have I known a peace so strong;

I thought I loved until you came along.

Clearly this has not been the case
