After the Party

After the party, when all are gone
Like clucking hens to their nest;
I pour one last welcome glass,
To put the evening to rest.

The house still echoes with the clatter
Of all the importunities of noise
The door, glad to empty the place,
—did so with eagerness and poise.

Wine in hand, I visit to reassure,
Rooms disturbed by disturbed souls.
Lowering windows’ blinds, like heavy eyes,
Such evenings take their toll.

Slowly, so as to silently,
I give the wall a kindly pat,
And turn the final light switch off—
We sleep better after that.

Clearly this has not been the case
