Quadrant readers will be dismayed to learn of the death of our cinema critic and essayist Neil McDonald (above), who passed away on February 25 in Sydney at the age of 77.

Neil’s most recent book, Valiant for Truth: The Life of Chester Wilmot, War Correspondent — reviewed in the November issue — was shortlisted for the Prize for Australian History in the 2017 Prime Minister’s Literary Awards.

His most recent contribution to Quadrant, Three Poirots on a Train, appeared in our December 2017 edition and can be read via this link or the one at the foot of this post.

A celebration of Neil’s life and achievements as a teacher, historian, author and film critic will be held at 12.30pm on Tuesday, March 6, in the East Chapel of Northern Suburbs Crematorium, 199 Delhi Road, North Ryde.
