James R. Flynn: Champion of Free Speech

On December 11, 2020, James R. Flynn passed away. Flynn was something of a curiosity: a political scientist who specialised in ethical philosophy and who became best known for his work on genetics and intelligence—particularly the contentious question of race and IQ. He became known internationally as the person who found what became known as the “Flynn Effect”—that there had been an increase in IQ scores in the general population over time.
