Suzanne Edgar: Bypassed

Cafes and shops are closing in the little country town. Like eyes that have seen enough, the shutters rattle down and stay that way. In Ryans’ old emporium lingerie’s had its day, haberdashery, too.   A pity the Greeks left for the city, they’re doing Development now. Natural Health is trying hard but Beauty Therapy palled. Bookings are slow for the Town Hall with its peeling-paint facade and “TREASURES” sells collectables deserters have left behind.   When the Royal Oak changed hands the kitchen staff resigned: “Meals Off till Further Notice”. No one seemed to mind when Front Bar cancelled…
