For years the 1943 film version of Margaret Kennedy’s novel and play The Constant Nymph was virtually a lost film. Many of us first discovered its existence through the extraordinary score written for the film by Eric Wolfgang Korngold when some of the main themes were included in British conductor Charles Gerhardt’s famous recordings of Korngold’s film music. Then there came Joan Fontaine’s affectionate tribute to her co-star Charles Boyer and director Edmund Goulding in her 1978 autobiography No Bed of Roses; but still no sign of the film.
