Analogies are frequently drawn between the Roman empire and the West. Permeated by a fuzzy-minded anti-Americanism, the accompanying predictions are usually dire, involving fire-and-brimstone pronouncements about the West’s manifold sins, heinous corruption and inevitable fall.
