Some 700 kilometres north of the Tropic of Capricorn, the Townsville jail, now Townsville Correctional Centre, has been around in one form or another for over 120 years. It is twelve kilometres west of Townsville, on the way to Julia Creek. The Queensland government first called it Her Majesty’s Penal Establishment at Stewart’s Creek, way back in 1893.
