Turnbull, spawn of Abbott

turnbull with nbn canThe theory held that the kinder, gentler, smoother and generally more enlightened Malcolm Turnbull would change everything by soothing the frothing left, claiming the middle ground and saving the Coalition from what was thought to be certain defeat at the next election, a rescue mission Tony Abbott was deemed incapable of pulling off.

Well, a month has passed since the party-room putsch and things aren’t quite working out as planned. While Turnbull’s personal popularity far exceeds that of Bill Shorten, their respective parties are locked neck-and-neck at 50% of the vote apiece.

And those on the left who were said to be so open to that Turnbull charm? It seems they haven’t changed sides after all, as the comments thread below Fairfax correspondent Mark Kenny’s latest effort attest. A sample:

Children in long term detention, biggest coal mine in Australia approved, no mention of climate change, screwing the vulnerable out of basic welfare, nothing is different, Mr Richie Rich is just a new flashy front.

And have you noticed, he already hums and haas between every word, just like Abbott did.

There is plenty more in a similar vein below Kenny’s story, which should in itself give additional cause for concern to the 55 Liberals who confirmed Turnbull’s appraisal of his own inevitability. What’s the point of a new PM, the columnist seems to be suggesting, if he neglects to govern as Prime Minister Kenny would do?

His column and those blistering reader comments are available via the link below.
