Welcome to Our New Editor

In the past month I’ve been involved in some important changes to the management of our organisation Quadrant Magazine Ltd. After fifteen years in the job I’ve decided to retire as editor of the magazine. In my place, the Quadrant board has appointed Rebecca Weisser to the position, a decision I wholeheartedly support. She will take over from our March 2024 edition, which means that this January-February edition is my last.

Many of our readers will know Rebecca (right) well from her previous career in journalism and publishing. From 2007 to 2015 she was a senior editor at the Australian, responsible for the much-read Commentary page and Cut & Paste. Since 2015, she has been a regular contributor and guest editor at Spectator Australia and an occasional contributor to Quadrant. She has also worked at the Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation, the Centre for Independent Studies, the Australian Catholic University, and she even served for a decade as an Australian diplomat. She has a First-Class Honours degree in Arts from Australian National University and is married to that other great Australian journalist Nick Cater.

I will still remain part of the Quadrant team and will be working as editor of Quadrant Books, now an important part of our structure. Several of our recent books on Australian history have been best-sellers and we hope to continue our success in this field. The position will give me the opportunity to finish some works of history that I have long had on my own plate, as well as appraising works from other authors who want to join the ranks of our existing team. So even though I’m retiring as editor, retirement itself is the last thing on my mind.

Thank you to all our subscribers, readers and others who have supported us all this time. Quadrant is in fine shape to continue doing what it does well and I’m sure our new editor will only enhance our performance.

  • Aboriginal Culture is Young, Not Ancient

To claim Aborigines have the world's oldest continuous culture is to misunderstand the meaning of culture, which continuously changes over time and location. For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case
