You have to hand it to Quadrant. For more than fifty years now – through many a change of style and politics – it has been our chief, and often our only, magazine of art, culture and politics. It now has a strong rival in the form of The Monthly, but The Monthly’s focus is quite narrowly Australian (as I know, having written for them about Neighbours), whereas Quadrant takes the whole world as its subject. You are not, for example, likely to encounter in the pages of The Monthly the eighteenth-century Scottish philosopher (the greatest philosopher, I think, ever to write in English) but you do in the latest [March] Quadrant, twice.

To claim Aborigines have the world's oldest continuous culture is to misunderstand the meaning of culture, which continuously changes over time and location. For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case
