BEFORE YOU LEAP to the conclusion that this new Oxford Companion to Australian Politics (OUP, 2007, $99.95) will be, like some other Oxford Companions, contaminated by a soft leftism, you should know that I am one of the contributors. I may be only one of more than 200 contributors, with only three entries out of 400 (Political cartoonists; Political journalists; and Political correctness). But I am not the only one with some conservative deviationism in my CV.

The editors acknowledge that John Nethercote of the Menzies Research Centre (who did the entry on Conservatism) played “a major role in helping shape the project”. Other contributors include John Roskam (Liberal democracy) who runs the Institute of Public Affairs; Greg Melleuish (Australian political thought), recently a Visiting Fellow at the IPA; Ian Marsh (Think tanks), who once did a stint in the federal secretariat of the Liberal Party; Malcolm Mackerras (Pendulum), who did his bit years ago in Ash…
