Rohan Buettel: Why is it that we watch cricket?
Why is it that we watch cricket?
Obsessively we watch each ball
With tension now the team’s behind
The wickets slowly, slowly fall
The pick strikes hard against the wall
The runs are leaden, grimly mined
Obsessively we watch each ball
The batsmen edging at a crawl
Fast bowlers snare them in a bind
The wickets slowly, slowly fall
Threatening time, the umpire’s call
Anxiety mounts, crowds the mind
Obsessively we watch each ball
The spinners catch us in their thrall
The runs come dear, but still they grind
The wickets slowly, slowly fall
For fatal fate will seam its pall
Exquisite agony defined
Obsessively we watch each ball
The wickets quick, too quickly fall
