Peter Jeffrey: Bonny Scotland
Bonny Scotland
O it’s grand to be a Scottish man
Like Sir Sean and Lord George Gordon,
To swear allegiance to yer clan
And deck yersel in yards and yards
Of yer ain glorious tartan.
You’ve got yer Hundred Pipers and yer smoky Scottish wine
And you’ve got yer Rabbie Burns, yer banks and braes and Auld Lang Syne.
You’ve got yer William Dunbar and yer bonny old Dundee,
Forget yer timor mortis and dismiss conturbat me.
What if a goodly bit of it, some say the bloody lot,
Was generated by the pen of gude Sir Walter Scott?
Is Rob Roy fact or fiction? We don’t really give a damn,
So let’s toast the whole confection in a vintage golden dram.
Let’s drink to Bonny Scotland and its bonny boats to Skye,
Its Bannockburns, its bonny Doons, its Comin’s thro the Rye;
In tartan pants we’ll sing and dance,
To show folks how we feel,
We’ll hum a tune from Brigadoon and do an eightsome reel.

To claim Aborigines have the world's oldest continuous culture is to misunderstand the meaning of culture, which continuously changes over time and location. For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case

A friend and longtime supporter of Quadrant, Clive James sent us a poem in 2010, which we published in our December issue. Like the Taronga Park Aquarium he recalls in its 'mocked-up sandstone cave' it's not to be forgotten
