On the Present European Disunion

Nanny McPhee and that homely Angela Merkel
are forever henceforth linked in my bemusing mind
—the one with her warts and stern manner rounding a circle,
the other, mothering poor nations left perilously blind.

And just as that fearsome Nanny over time with gently inflexible behaviour
brought an unruly household of children to heel and to health,
so too might this East German motherly saviour
restore the EU to reunion and better-spent wealth …

Dear Nanny, we need you (so beautifully played there by Emma)
—when will you return with your bustling compendium of rules,
and Angela (dear hausfrau) minding your flock as faithfully as any Maremma
becoming beautiful too, like Nanny, in your earnest shepherding of fools!

For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case
