Hobart in the Sixties

Hobart was the place to live in the sixties

Tucked away from murder and war

You could wear weird clothes and listen to Arlo Guthrie.

We didn’t have much poetry

Revolution was in the air, but we didn’t need to dare

So, Hobart was the place to live in the sixties.

We had records of the Dylan mysteries

We had the mini-skirt, for sure

You could wear weird clothes and listen to Arlo Guthrie.

We had the radio and most of us had TVs

JFK was shot and Vietnam was just next door

But, Hobart was the place to live in the sixties

We had The Beatles and Bee Gees

Martin Luther King was murdered, but not on our shore

You could wear weird clothes and listen to Arlo Guthrie.

Calwell was shot in the face in Sydney

The Middle East had their six-day war

Hobart was the place to live in the sixties

You could wear weird clothes and listen to Arlo Guthrie.

  • Aboriginal Culture is Young, Not Ancient

To claim Aborigines have the world's oldest continuous culture is to misunderstand the meaning of culture, which continuously changes over time and location. For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case

  • Pennies for the Shark

A friend and longtime supporter of Quadrant, Clive James sent us a poem in 2010, which we published in our December issue. Like the Taronga Park Aquarium he recalls in its 'mocked-up sandstone cave' it's not to be forgotten
