Five Flowers

        1

        Composition

A gardener

or a painter is needed

to improve

the composition of those

sprawling purple irises.

        2

        Plenty

If the lolling weight

of the purple flower-cluster

is not enough, then

add a fidgeting fantail to

the leaning agapanthus stalk.

        3

        Celebration

Ten weeks before

Christmas, the arum lilies

conduct their own

celebration of the Child,

waving candles in white cups.

        4

        Wheel

Picture a circle

then place it as a rim around

the daisy petals

spoking so straight and slender

from their orange pollen hub.

        5

        Dive

On its second day

in the vase, the dangling fuchsia’s

four slender petals

curve right back, as if the flower

has resolved to dive into death.

  • Aboriginal Culture is Young, Not Ancient

To claim Aborigines have the world's oldest continuous culture is to misunderstand the meaning of culture, which continuously changes over time and location. For a culture not to change over time would be a reproach and certainly not a cause for celebration, for it would indicate that there had been no capacity to adapt. Clearly this has not been the case

A friend and longtime supporter of Quadrant, Clive James sent us a poem in 2010, which we published in our December issue. Like the Taronga Park Aquarium he recalls in its 'mocked-up sandstone cave' it's not to be forgotten
