Ian Stewart: ‘Sudden Song’

Sudden Song

Out walking
Thoughts swirling
Enclosing me
In myself
Suddenly I am frozen
I stop and look up
Above me an open window
Curtain fluttering
The voice draws me in
High, soft, mellifluous
I hang, to listen
What does she sing?
The language unclear
It makes no difference
The intensity of feeling sharp
Trickling down with the notes
At first a lament
Then joy pushes through
A lover returning perhaps?
A difficulty overcome?
A life spared?
The song stops
Yet the notes hang in the air
Like drifting dandelion seed
I smile and walk on
