Debasish Mishra: ‘An Idle Guitar in Lockdown’

An Idle Guitar in Lockdown

The guitar leans on the wall
—It has been many months now—
and perpetuates its position
as if it was born for this slant tilt.

I sometimes think the guitar
and the wall are a couple,
quietly wedded, sharing music.
Does the wall have ears?

When I’m awake at three, I hear
a dirge-like murmur, but I know
the guitar has emotions too.
It sulks for the crack in the wall.
