David Isaacson: ‘Everyman’s Dream’

Everyman’s Dream

I want a job that doesn’t own me
I want to live in house by the sea
Mow the lawn, check my mail, walk the dog every day
Then drive the Rolls to Port Melbourne to collect my pay
And it’s everyman’s dream

I want to leave the corporate rat cage
Find the door marked “freedom” and flee
To a patio with my babe, sipping lattes every day
Then fly the chopper to Port Melbourne to collect my pay
And it’s everyman’s dream

I want to give up public transport
Quit the morning germ-sharing parade
Put my suit in the shed and just sail away
Make a stop in Port Melbourne to collect my pay
And it’s everyman’s dream

With my suit in the shed and boat in the bay
I know that
The best time to retire
Is yesterday
