Two Poems

Kiblat Like the call to prayer, nowhere in the room lets us forget where all belief must culminate: the arrow to Mecca stencilled across the ceiling or painted on the concrete floor, a green decal clinging, in the better-class hotels, to the bottom of the bedside drawer (beneath the superseded ecumene of Gideon’s Bible). It points across the globe, from pole to pole, to the granite house of Abraham where millions trace the fullness of a circle around the seething lump of meteorite from before Adam and Eve’s time—“the sleep of ages”.
