Michael Thwaites and the ACT SIR: In the June issue Peter Ryan quotes from a poem by Michael Thwaites about enlisting in the Second World War and asks, “But how many Australians recall the name of Michael Thwaites today?” The answer is, quite a few. We in the ACT well remember this man whose kindly courteous manner masked his high intelligence. We know he was a pre-war Rhodes scholar, a King’s gold medallist for poetry, an officer on an anti-submarine escort trawler, he served most effectively in ASIO and would certainly be recalled with awe in that office.
