At Passchendaele

At Passchendaele Memorial Museum
A painstakingly reconstructed dugout
Stairs and boards and blood and bodies
Flash and roar and shake of shell
Convey to the visitor, fresh from his rented Peugeot
Before his picnic in the garden grounds
(Ham, cheese, strawberries, bread; beer like wine)
Precisely no idea of what it was like.
