Surfacing again each Sunday,
whether breakfast’s rice or cheese,
their parents speak a mother tongue
but children use teenagerese,

a simple grammar made of grunts,
a vocab that contrives to never
say exactly what it means
except perhaps “as if”, “whatever”.
